Independence Day – 10 Facts About The 4th July!

1. The 4th of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence (or Independence Day) in the United States in 1776.

2. It was at this time that the thirteen American colonies declared themselves a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer a part of the British Empire.

3. ‘The Founding Fathers’ was the name given to those individuals who led this revolution against the British Crown.

4. Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and he went on to become the 3rd President of the United States. His likeness is famously carved into Mount Rushmore, along with Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt.

5. George Washington was widely admired, and as such presided over the convention which oversaw the drafting of the convention. He became known as ‘the father of his country’ and became the first President of the United States of America.

6. John Adams, also one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, became the second President of the United States of America.

7. Both Jefferson and Adams co-incidentally died on the 4th July 1826, exactly 50 years after the Declaration was signed.

8. Five years later, James Monroe, a Founding Father and subsequent President (but not a signatory of the Declaration) also died on July 4th 1831.

9. Independence Day is therefore famous as the national day of the United States and is always a time to celebrate in spectacular fashion. Usually the celebrations take place outdoors with carnivals, music, fireworks, fairs, music, concerts barbecues and much more.

10. Consequently, it is typically a time where family reunions take place as families get together to celebrate together. In addition, decorations are usually in the red white and blue of the American Flag.
