National Siblings Day

Posted on

It’s National Siblings Day! Do you have a brother or sister? Perhaps you are a twin or part of an extended family? National Siblings Day is celebrated in the United States on April 10th, so we are looking at where this tradition started and why.

National Siblings Day – Where did it come from?

Claudia Evart origianlly conceived the idea as a means by which she could honour the memory of her brother and sister, both of whom had passed away at an early age.

From these American beginnings, Siblings Day has now spread far and wide across the globe and is now a popular family tradition in many parts of the world.

Interesting Facts

Siblings may spend all of their time in one another’s pockets, or love to hate each other  – either way, there’s no denying the impact they have on family life. Here are a few interesting facts you may not have been aware of:

1) Children spend more time with their siblings than with friends, parents, teachers or even alone.

2) One researcher found that brothers and sisters between 3 and 7 years old engage in conflict 3.5 times an hour. Younger children fight even more, with a fight happening every 10 minutes. Who says parenting is stressful?!

3) In general, siblings interact significantly less with each other if they are not fully related.

4) Siblings tend to resemble each other in looks and intelligence but are quite different in personality.

5) Your sibling’s bad habits may rub off. For instance, a girl with a teenage sister who becomes pregnant is four to six times as likely to become a teenage mum.
