Since moving into our shop in Dunster, we have been thinking about how we can offer something truly special for the local community. We wanted to create a focal point that celebrates the village and gives visitors a meaningful way to remember their time here.

That is why we have commissioned a brand new Dunster artwork, which will be arriving very soon.

Created especially for Hall of Names by artist Lucy Loveheart, this piece promises to capture the spirit of Dunster in a joyful and distinctive way. While the artwork is not yet in place, we are excited to share a preview of what is to come.

A celebration of Dunster and its landmarks

This new Dunster artwork will feature a stylised view of the village and its surroundings. It brings together many of Dunster’s most recognisable landmarks, including Dunster Castle, the Packhorse Bridge and the West Somerset Railway.

It also reflects the natural beauty of the area, from the rolling Exmoor hills to the coastline and surrounding landscape. Alongside these features, the artwork will highlight the independent shops and businesses that give Dunster its unique character.

Lucy Loveheart’s style is full of colour, movement and charm. Her work feels lively and uplifting, offering a fresh perspective on a place that so many people love to visit.

The piece also draws inspiration from the local landscape that inspired the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, adding another layer of meaning to the design.

Inspiring a new range of gifts

This Dunster artwork will not just be a single piece on display. It will form the inspiration for a brand new range of products, which we will be introducing in the coming months.

These items will sit alongside our existing collections, including our printed scrolls, crystal and glass gifts, and shields and plaques. As always, our products reflect heritage, storytelling and the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of each surname.

This new direction allows us to offer something completely different. It gives visitors the chance to take home a unique memento of Dunster, inspired by a design that cannot be found anywhere else.

A growing connection with the Dunster community

Since opening our shop, we have enjoyed building strong connections within the Dunster community. This artwork reflects that relationship and brings together familiar places and shared experiences into one design.

We have worked closely with Lucy, sharing ideas and inspiration drawn from our shop, our customers and the village itself. As a result, the finished artwork promises to feel both personal and meaningful.

In Scotland, many surnames are connected to larger clans as what are called septs. A sept is a family or group of families who may not share the same surname as the clan chief but historically owed allegiance to the clan.

Septs were often smaller branches of a clan, families living in the same area, or households brought under the protection of a chief. This system allowed clans to grow, form alliances, and strengthen ties across regions.

For example, the MacLaren clan historically included septs such as McFarlane and McLachlan. These families were connected to the clan through loyalty, shared ancestry, or protection agreements, even if their surnames differed.

Why Septs Matter in Heraldry

Septs do not automatically have the legal right to the clan chief’s coat of arms. The Lord Lyon King of Arms grants arms to individuals, not surnames or clans. However, members of septs often use a crest badge or elements from the chief’s heraldic symbols to show their connection.

These badges may include:

• Crests from the chief’s arms
• Plants or heraldic symbols indicating allegiance or shared heritage
• Strap-and-buckle designs encircling the crest to show it belongs to the clan chief

This distinction is important: sept members can display a badge symbolically, but it does not give legal entitlement to the arms themselves.

Clan and Surname History Prints

Dunster School has recently completed a wonderful school heraldry project. We were delighted to hear that the children have been busy designing coats of arms ready for the celebrations. With the Dunster Winter Festival approaching on 6 and 7 December, pupils have been creating hearldic shields with a wide variety of colourful symbols. (You can use our free coat of arms template to design your own!) Their enthusiasm has been inspiring, and their artwork has shown real imagination. A huge well done to the staff and children who have been involved in this fantastic and creative project. We can see that imaginations have been let loose, with lots of symbols being used in the artworks.

Since opening our Dunster shop, we have enjoyed becoming part of the community, and the school is clearly one of the things at its heart. We hope that the children enjoyed exploring heraldry. Their creativity around the topic of coats of arms has reminded us why we enjoy sharing this subject. Under the leadership of Mr Paul James, the school website describes it as “a haven of learning… surrounded by breath-taking landscapes. As a happy, kind, and caring school, we are proud to be at the heart of our supportive community, unwavering in our commitment to place children at the centre of all we do.” Judging on this project, the children have been getting well and truly immersed in their work!

A fun project for schools and families

This school heraldry project is simple for teachers to organise and easy for families to try at home. Our free coat of arms template offers a clear starting point. It allows children to explore colour, symbols and meaning while learning about heraldic traditions. The children at Dunster have created theirs on cardboard shields which they will be able to carry. So you could copy their example and cut out a shape that you like. But equally you could do yours on a piece of A4 paper and cut it out afterwards.

Some children become curious about the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of their own surname. Families can explore further through our online dictionary of heraldry symbols, which explains the meaning behind many traditional images. This resource helps young learners choose symbols which they feel reflect their character or achievements.

We’re nearly there — and getting excited! Our new Hall of Names shop in Dunster is almost ready to open its doors. We couldn’t be more grateful for the welcome we’ve already received from the local community.

We’ve met fellow shopkeepers and passers-by. And the friendly spirit of Dunster has made these final stages of setting up feel extra special. As a family-run business rooted in West Somerset, it’s great to feel part of this thriving village. We are at the end of High Street on the traffic lights on the corner.

Local Support, Local Craftsmanship

It’s been a real team effort getting the shop ready. Our stock has arrived, the fixtures and fittings are nearly complete. And we’re now putting the finishing touches to the display. One of those is our brand-new counter sign. It reads: “Welcome to the Home of Personalised Gifts.” (View our personalised gift categories)

Our external and internal signage was designed in-house by Jo and created by the brilliant Dan at Somerset Sign and Print Co. — a local business we were proud to support, as we always try to source locally whenever possible.

And speaking of family help, Wendy’s retired dad has been involved too. He’s been building our beautiful new counter top, which is now the heart of the shop.

A Village That Already Feels Like Home

We’re not even open yet, and already Dunster feels like home. We’ve had so many kind conversations with local residents and shop owners as we’ve been moving in — and we’d especially like to thank those who’ve had patience while we’ve unloaded “bits and bobs” into the space! We have had so many materials, supplies and stock to sort out but we are nearly there!

We’re also grateful to the lovely team at the local parish magazine. They have kindly helped us distribute introductory postcards to villagers. This is a small way for us to introduce what Hall of Names is all about and feel connected.

Rooted in Local Life

This will be our first bricks-and-mortar shop in Dunster. But Hall of Names has long been part of the West Somerset community. We’re proud sponsors of the Williton Rockets football team, who proudly wear our name on their shirts. And we’re passionate about celebrating local names, families, and histories. We’re excited to share some news from Hall of Names HQ. We’re opening a brand-new shop in the beautiful medieval village of Dunster!

Known for its cobbled pavements, historic buildings and iconic castle, Dunster is a place steeped in the kind of heritage we’ve been celebrating for over 20 years. So, where better to open our next shop than in the heart of a village that feels like stepping back in time?

The Hall of Names Dunster store will be filled with our most popular personalised gifts. These include coats of arms, surname histories, hand-painted shields, and engraved glassware. All of these beautiful gifts are inspired by the stories behind your name.

Why Dunster?

Currently, the Hall of Names system is used at historic sites all over the UK. They include impressive sites such as Warwick Castle, Iverarary Castle, Ludlow Castle, Pembroke Castle, Leeds Castle, NTS Culloden Battlefield, Blenheim Palace and many more. Dunster is a natural fit for our business because it isn’t just a pretty place (although it certainly is that). But it’s a village rich in history, with roots stretching back to the Norman Conquest. The imposing Dunster Castle and the ancient Yarn Market form the backdrop to this beautiful setting. Plus, the centuries-old cottages also contribute to the unique character of this West Somerset gem.

But more than that, Dunster feels deeply connected to the values we hold dear at Hall of Names — tradition, identity, and legacy.

As a business rooted in West Somerset ourselves, we know the area well. The Quantock Hills are visible from our offices in Crowcombe. We see the changing leaves of oak, ash and beech trees from our windows, and our office Jack Russell, Willow, has taken up her spot by the heater. There’s a definite feeling of a new season ahead. We hope she settles in well to her new surroundings at our Dunster shop!

From our early beginnings at shows and events, bringing Hall of Names to Dunster feels like coming home — and we can’t wait to welcome both locals and visitors into the new space.

It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks here as everything starts to come together. The signage has now been designed and installed, the carpet has been fitted, and electrics and broadband are all sorted. Supplies are on order and the shelves are beginning to take shape, with plenty of festive ideas in the pipeline as we head towards Christmas.

Even Wendy’s dad has been getting involved — he’s built the handmade counter top where we’ll be welcoming customers to the new space!

We’ve also had the pleasure of meeting many friendly faces from the village — fellow shopkeepers and Dunster locals — and we’ve felt such a warm welcome already. With the Dunster Winter Festival to look forward to, we’re excited to meet both villagers and visitors at what’s sure to be a fantastic community event.
