Why do so many Irish surnames start with O’? The answer lies in Ireland’s ancient naming traditions. The prefix O’ originally meant “descendant of” and helped identify a person’s connection to an ancestor or family group.

Today, surnames such as O’Brien, O’Connor and O’Sullivan are recognised around the world. However, their origins stretch back many centuries and tell an important story about Irish heritage, family identity and social structure.

Quick Summary

O’ means “descendant of”.

The prefix developed in early medieval Ireland.

Many Irish families later dropped the O’.

Some restored it during the Irish cultural revival.

O’ surnames remain an important part of Irish identity today.

The Meaning of O’ in Irish Surnames

The prefix O’ comes from the Irish word “Ó”, meaning “grandson” or “descendant”. It identified a person as belonging to a particular family line.

For example, O’Brien means “descendant of Brien”, while O’Connor means “descendant of Conchobhar”.

These names helped distinguish one family group from another at a time when communities were organised around kinship and ancestry.

As Irish society developed, these hereditary surnames became established and passed from one generation to the next.

Ireland Was One of the First Countries to Use Hereditary Surnames

Many people are surprised to learn that Ireland was among the first countries in Europe to adopt hereditary surnames.

By the tenth and eleventh centuries, Irish families were already using surnames that would continue through future generations. This happened long before hereditary surnames became common in many other parts of Europe.

As a result, some Irish surnames can be traced back more than a thousand years.

Why Did Some Families Lose the O’?

Not every Irish surname still carries its original prefix.

During periods of English administration, many Irish names were anglicised. In some cases, prefixes such as O’ and Mac disappeared altogether.

For example:

O’Neill became Neill

O’Doherty became Doherty

O’Sullivan became Sullivan

Some families removed the prefix voluntarily to make their names easier to spell or pronounce. Others experienced changes through official records and administration.

Consequently, modern Irish surnames often exist in several different forms.

Why Were Some Prefixes Restored?

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, interest in Irish language and culture grew significantly.

This period saw many families restore traditional forms of their surnames. As Irish national identity strengthened, prefixes such as O’ and Mac became symbols of cultural heritage.

Today, both versions of many surnames continue to exist.

For example, you may encounter both Sullivan and O’Sullivan, depending on the family’s history.

What Is the Difference Between O’ and Mac?

While O’ means “descendant of”, the prefix Mac means “son of”.

Both developed as part of Ireland’s naming traditions.

Examples include:

MacCarthy

MacMahon

MacDonnell

Over time, both O’ and Mac surnames became hereditary family names and remain common throughout Ireland and among Irish communities around the world.

Irish Migration Spread These Names Worldwide

Irish migration helped carry O’ surnames far beyond Ireland’s shores.

Large numbers of Irish people settled in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. As they moved, they brought their family names and traditions with them.

Today, Irish surnames are among the most recognised names in the English-speaking world.

Many people researching their family history discover Irish ancestry through their surname and then begin exploring historical records, migration patterns and family stories.

Why Irish Surname History Remains Fascinating

Irish surnames provide a direct connection to centuries of history. They reveal clues about ancestry, language and cultural identity.

At Hall of Names, we have spent many years researching surname history and heraldry. Our database contains over one million surnames, including thousands of Irish names and traditional sept histories.

Many visitors begin by exploring the history of their surname before continuing their own family history research.

What do you buy the dad who has everything? It is a question many people ask every Father’s Day. After all, if he already has plenty of socks, mugs, chocolates and gadgets, finding something meaningful can feel almost impossible. But don’t worry because we are here to help!

The good news is that the best Father’s Day gifts are not always the most expensive. Often, they are the gifts that tell a story, spark a conversation or create a lasting connection to family history and heritage.

Quick Summary of the issue!

Many dads already have the usual Father’s Day gifts.

Personalised gifts often feel more meaningful.

Family history gifts can create lasting memories.

Heritage-inspired presents offer something different.

Thoughtful gifts are often remembered long after Father’s Day.

Why Dads Can Be So Difficult to Buy For

Many fathers reach a stage where they simply buy the things they need for themselves. As a result, choosing a gift becomes more challenging every year.

At the same time, many people want to give something more personal than another pair of socks or a bottle of beer. They want a gift that reflects the recipient’s interests, personality and family story.

This is why personalised and heritage-inspired gifts continue to grow in popularity.

A whisky tumbler makes a great gift and we have a choice of colour or engraved heraldry.

The Appeal of Family History Gifts

Family history has never been more popular. Television programmes, genealogy websites and online archives have encouraged many people to learn more about their ancestors.

A gift connected to family heritage offers something unique. It provides an opportunity to discover surname origins, historical records and fascinating stories from the past.

For many fathers, these gifts become treasured keepsakes that can be displayed and enjoyed for years. For example our Printed Scrolls offer a real insight into the history and meaning of Dad’s surname and its earliest known coat of arms.

Gifts That Tell a Story

The most memorable presents often have a story behind them.

A surname history print, for example, combines researched surname information with the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. It creates an interesting talking point and a meaningful display piece for the home.

Similarly, personalised gifts featuring heraldic artwork can celebrate family heritage in a way that feels thoughtful and distinctive.

Rather than giving a gift that is quickly forgotten, many people now look for items that create a stronger emotional connection.

More Than Just Prints

While surname history prints remain one of our most popular Father’s Day gifts, they are not the only option.

Many customers also choose engraved crystal gifts, whisky tumblers, decanters, shields and plaques, or personalised watches and clocks inspired by heraldry and family history.

These gifts combine practical use with personal meaning, making them suitable for fathers, grandfathers and family historians alike.

Crystal & Glass

Watches & Clocks

Ideas for Father’s Day

Why Meaningful Gifts Matter

A thoughtful gift shows that time and effort have gone into the decision.

It demonstrates that the recipient’s interests and personal story have been considered. In many cases, that thoughtfulness matters far more than the price tag.

As Father’s Day approaches, many families are looking for gifts that celebrate memories, heritage and shared experiences. Family history provides a natural way to make that connection.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping people explore the origins and stories behind their name while discovering unique gift ideas inspired by heritage.

Many people now use AI tools to create heraldic artwork and personalised shield designs. However, can somebody legally or historically create and claim their own coat of arms?

In most cases, the answer is no.

While anybody can design heraldic-style artwork for enjoyment or decoration, official coats of arms follow long-established heraldic rules and traditions. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, new coats of arms must be granted by the <a href=”https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/”>College of Arms</a>.

At Hall of Names, we increasingly see customers sending AI-generated heraldic designs for our artists to reproduce onto products such as shields and plaques. We are always happy to create decorative items from customer artwork. However, these designs should not be confused with officially recognised heraldry.

Quick summary

Anybody can create heraldic-style artwork for fun

AI tools can generate creative shield designs

Official coats of arms cannot simply be invented

Heraldry follows historical rules and legal traditions

Hall of Names products reference:
“the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname”

Coats of arms do not belong to entire families or surnames

How official coats of arms work

Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals, not entire families or surnames. Heraldic authorities granted or recognised these designs under strict rules.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the authority responsible for granting coats of arms is the College of Arms. Scotland operates separately through the Court of the Lord Lyon.

This means somebody cannot simply create a shield design online and officially claim it as their personal coat of arms without formal recognition.

AI heraldry and creative design

AI image generators have made heraldic design more accessible than ever. Many people enjoy experimenting with colours, animals, symbols and medieval-style shields.

Some customers even ask our artist to reproduce their AI-created designs onto our hand-painted shield or other decorative products.

We are always happy to help with this type of creative project. However, we believe it is important to explain the historical distinction clearly and responsibly.

Decorative heraldic artwork does not automatically become an official coat of arms.

Our High Gloss Shields feature coats of arms printed straight onto the wooden backing, and this look can also be achieved with AI imagery.

Learning about heraldry properly

For people interested in heraldry, learning the meaning behind traditional symbols can be fascinating. Our Heraldry Dictionary explains many common heraldic images and their historical meanings.

We also offer a free coat of arms template, allowing families, schools and enthusiasts to design their own heraldic-style artwork for educational and creative purposes.

This can be a fun way to explore symbolism, history and medieval design traditions.

Why historical accuracy matters

It is not true to say that everybody sharing a surname automatically shares the same coat of arms. And at Hall of Names, we believe historical accuracy matters.

Our products are based on the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. They are provided for historical interest, heritage appreciation and decorative enjoyment.

They should not be interpreted as proof of direct ancestry, legal ownership or genealogical entitlement.

Hall of Names and heraldic heritage

Hall of Names specialises in surname history, heraldry and heritage-inspired gifts. Our database contains over one million surnames, helping customers explore the history and symbolism linked to their name.

Customers can explore our printed scrolls , crystal gifts and personalised heraldic products online or in our Dunster shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can anybody design a heraldic shield?

Yes. Anybody can create heraldic-style artwork for creative or decorative purposes.

Does creating a shield make it an official coat of arms?

No. Official coats of arms require recognition from the appropriate heraldic authority.

Do all people with the same surname share one coat of arms?

No. Coats of arms historically belonged to individuals, not entire surnames.

Can Hall of Names reproduce customer artwork?

Yes. We are happy to create products using customer-supplied artwork and designs.

What do Hall of Names products represent?

They reference the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname.

Since moving into our shop in Dunster, we have been thinking about how we can offer something truly special for the local community. We wanted to create a focal point that celebrates the village and gives visitors a meaningful way to remember their time here.

That is why we have commissioned a brand new Dunster artwork, which will be arriving very soon.

Created especially for Hall of Names by artist Lucy Loveheart, this piece promises to capture the spirit of Dunster in a joyful and distinctive way. While the artwork is not yet in place, we are excited to share a preview of what is to come.

A celebration of Dunster and its landmarks

This new Dunster artwork will feature a stylised view of the village and its surroundings. It brings together many of Dunster’s most recognisable landmarks, including Dunster Castle, the Packhorse Bridge and the West Somerset Railway.

It also reflects the natural beauty of the area, from the rolling Exmoor hills to the coastline and surrounding landscape. Alongside these features, the artwork will highlight the independent shops and businesses that give Dunster its unique character.

Lucy Loveheart’s style is full of colour, movement and charm. Her work feels lively and uplifting, offering a fresh perspective on a place that so many people love to visit.

The piece also draws inspiration from the local landscape that inspired the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, adding another layer of meaning to the design.

Inspiring a new range of gifts

This Dunster artwork will not just be a single piece on display. It will form the inspiration for a brand new range of products, which we will be introducing in the coming months.

These items will sit alongside our existing collections, including our printed scrolls, crystal and glass gifts, and shields and plaques. As always, our products reflect heritage, storytelling and the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of each surname.

This new direction allows us to offer something completely different. It gives visitors the chance to take home a unique memento of Dunster, inspired by a design that cannot be found anywhere else.

A growing connection with the Dunster community

Since opening our shop, we have enjoyed building strong connections within the Dunster community. This artwork reflects that relationship and brings together familiar places and shared experiences into one design.

We have worked closely with Lucy, sharing ideas and inspiration drawn from our shop, our customers and the village itself. As a result, the finished artwork promises to feel both personal and meaningful.

Watch this space

We are incredibly excited about what is coming next. The artwork will be arriving soon, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

We will be revealing the piece in the near future, along with the first products inspired by it. If you are interested in Dunster, local heritage or unique gifts, this is something to look out for.

Please keep an eye on our updates, follow along with our journey and share this with anyone who loves Dunster as much as we do.

Dunster School has recently completed a wonderful school heraldry project. We were delighted to hear that the children have been busy designing coats of arms ready for the celebrations. With the Dunster Winter Festival approaching on 6 and 7 December, pupils have been creating hearldic shields with a wide variety of colourful symbols. (You can use our free coat of arms template to design your own!) Their enthusiasm has been inspiring, and their artwork has shown real imagination. A huge well done to the staff and children who have been involved in this fantastic and creative project. We can see that imaginations have been let loose, with lots of symbols being used in the artworks.

Since opening our Dunster shop, we have enjoyed becoming part of the community, and the school is clearly one of the things at its heart. We hope that the children enjoyed exploring heraldry. Their creativity around the topic of coats of arms has reminded us why we enjoy sharing this subject. Under the leadership of Mr Paul James, the school website describes it as “a haven of learning… surrounded by breath-taking landscapes. As a happy, kind, and caring school, we are proud to be at the heart of our supportive community, unwavering in our commitment to place children at the centre of all we do.” Judging on this project, the children have been getting well and truly immersed in their work!

A fun project for schools and families

This school heraldry project is simple for teachers to organise and easy for families to try at home. Our free coat of arms template offers a clear starting point. It allows children to explore colour, symbols and meaning while learning about heraldic traditions. The children at Dunster have created theirs on cardboard shields which they will be able to carry. So you could copy their example and cut out a shape that you like. But equally you could do yours on a piece of A4 paper and cut it out afterwards.

Some children become curious about the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of their own surname. Families can explore further through our online dictionary of heraldry symbols, which explains the meaning behind many traditional images. This resource helps young learners choose symbols which they feel reflect their character or achievements.

Families can also browse our blog to learn more about surnames, heritage and the stories behind different coats of arms.

Looking ahead to the Dunster Winter Festival

This project forms part of the village’s preparations for the Dunster Winter Festival. The event brings the village together and offers a warm, festive atmosphere for residents and visitors. We are excited to take part for the first time since opening our doors and look forward to celebrating with the community.

When it comes to gift-giving, it’s often the simplest ideas that resonate most. A personalised bookmark gift might seem modest, but for many people, it becomes a lasting keepsake — especially when it reflects their family name and history.

At Hall of Names, we’ve seen how a well-chosen gift, even something as small as a bookmark, can spark conversations, honour heritage, and become a cherished part of someone’s story.

A personalised bookmark gift engraved with the earliest coat of arms linked to a surname – a meaningful keepsake for any reader.

The Power of Personalisation

What makes a gift meaningful isn’t how much it costs, but how well it reflects the recipient. A bookmark engraved with the coat of arms associated with a surname transforms a practical object into something personal and unique.

It shows thought and care — you’ve chosen something just for them, and it links directly to their identity and ancestry. Whether it’s for a birthday, retirement, Christmas stocking, or a small thank-you, a personalised bookmark always feels intentional.

Small Size, Big Impact

Not everyone has space for larger gifts or wall art. That’s where a personalised bookmark fits in beautifully. It’s useful, compact, and easy to post — especially ideal for long-distance gifting.

More importantly, our bookmarks feature the earliest recorded coat of arms relating to a bearer of the surname, taken from our database of over a million names. This gives the item historical weight and emotional value.

A Touch of Heritage in Everyday Life

People often keep bookmarks tucked into their favourite books — sometimes for years. That means the person you gift it to will see their name’s story again and again. It becomes more than a gift — it’s a quiet daily reminder of their roots.

Thoughtful Gifts Don’t Need to Be Expensive

There’s a reason bookmarks remain such a popular gift idea — they’re affordable, lightweight, and easy to send. But when you personalise one with a coat of arms and a surname, it becomes something far more special than the usual shop-bought option.

Heraldic symbols have fascinated people for centuries. From lions and eagles to crosses, crowns, and colours, these designs were used to help identify individuals in battle, tournaments, and official life. Over time, many symbols also came to represent qualities such as courage, loyalty, wisdom, or faith. This guide explores the origins of heraldic symbols, how they developed in medieval Europe, and why they remain popular today in surname history gifts and decorative heraldry. Found on coats of arms, these symbols date back to medieval times, when knights, nobles, and later families used them to express values, allegiances, and achievements.

The coat of arms associated with a surname often includes several of these symbols, forming a rich tapestry of historical insight.

At Hall of Names, we use historic surname records to reproduce the earliest recorded coat of arms linked to a bearer of the name — and heraldic symbols play a key part in that story.

How Heraldic Symbols Began

Modern heraldry developed during the 12th century, when armoured knights needed clear visual identification on shields and surcoats. Bold shapes, animals, colours, and geometric designs could be recognised quickly from a distance. As armour and helmets became more uniform, there was a need for bold, visible identification — both in tournaments and on the battlefield. As heraldry became formalised, many symbols were passed down or adapted through family lines and institutions.Where Did Heraldic Symbols Come From?

Knights began using colourful designs on shields and banners. Over time, these designs were formalised into coats of arms, complete with standardised symbols that conveyed personal and family meaning.

Symbols were soon governed by rules and recorded in registers, making heraldry one of the earliest systems of visual identity.

Heraldry was used to distinguish knights in battle.

Why Certain Symbols Became Popular

Many heraldic symbols were chosen because they were easy to recognise and carried strong associations.

Examples include:

Lion – courage, nobility, strength

Eagle – authority, vision, power

Cross – faith and service

Crown – sovereignty, honour

Chevron – protection or building achievement

Fleur-de-lis – purity, devotion, French influence

Meanings could vary by region and period, so heraldry should be seen as symbolic tradition rather than a fixed dictionary. Symbols appear time and again on coats of arms — but their meanings are anything but generic.

Heraldic Symbols in Britain

Heraldry became especially important in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland through royal courts, noble houses, civic bodies, and military traditions. Many surnames are linked to historically recorded coats of arms associated with early bearers of the name. These designs often feature animals, ordinaries, and colours common to British heraldic practice.

Hall of Names specialises in researching surname history and historically recorded heraldic designs associated with surnames, with a database of over one million names.

Why Were Symbols So Important?

Heraldic symbols were more than decorative. In a time when literacy was rare, images spoke louder than words. The lion on a shield immediately declared bravery. A crescent signalled honour. Each coat of arms became a badge of identity — a way to tell your story visually.

Today, they offer a glimpse into the lives, values, and aspirations of those who first bore the name. Even if the spelling of that name changes over the years (Think Shakespeare which is spelt in a variety of ways!)

Coats of Arms and Surnames

Every coat of arms we feature is based on the earliest historically recorded version associated with a surname — not a personal family crest. These arms include symbols, crests, and sometimes mottos, all of which are carefully preserved in our heraldic records.

You can explore your own name by browsing our range of products featuring these traditional arms, including:

What Does Your Surname Say About Your History?

Surname meanings can reveal fascinating clues about family history. Many surnames began as descriptions of occupations, locations, personal characteristics, or family relationships. Over time, they became lasting links to the past. This guide explores surname meanings, how family names developed, and how learning about your surname can open the door to wider family history research.

Updated April 2026 with additional FAQs and guidance from Hall of Names.

Surnames are more than just a means to identify ourselves. They often carry centuries of meaning, hinting at your family name’s origins, status, profession, or the places that people once called home. Understanding the meaning behind your surname can open a window into your ancestors’ lives and reveal stories you never knew existed.

At Hall of Names, we’ve helped thousands of customers trace the meaning of their surname using our database of over a million names, each linked to its earliest recorded coat of arms. But how exactly can a surname meaning connect you to the past?

Occupational Surnames

Many surnames changed spelling over time as families moved, languages evolved, and records were written phonetically. This means researching surname meanings often involves looking at several historic spelling variations rather than only the modern form.

Many surnames reflect the job that an ancestor once held. Names like Smith, Taylor, or Mason are clear examples of occupational surnames. A surname like Fletcher refers to someone who made arrows, while Chandler once meant a candle-maker.

These names give a direct clue to the kind of work your family may have done, sometimes as far back as medieval times.

Is your Surname an Occupational type?

Geographical and Locational Surnames

Some names are rooted in places. Surnames like Hill, Wood, or Atwater indicate a landscape feature near where your family once lived. Others, such as London, Devon, or Kent, suggest an origin from a particular town or region.

Locational surnames were especially common among families who moved from one area to another — their name became a label of origin.

Does your surname reflect the place it originated from?

Patronymic and Ancestral Surnames

Names like Johnson (son of John), MacDonald (son of Donald), or O’Brien (descendant of Brien) point to family lineage. These types of surnames were particularly common in Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian traditions, and they help trace a family’s paternal line through generations.

Nicknames and Descriptive Surnames

Sometimes, a surname came from a personal trait. For instance, Short, Brown, or Strong could all have started as descriptive nicknames that stuck. These surnames are a fascinating glimpse into how people were perceived by their communities — whether by looks, strength, or personality.

Cultural Identity and Migration

Surnames can also reflect cultural shifts and migration. A name with Norman, Gaelic, or Anglo-Saxon roots might indicate how your family’s identity evolved over time. In some cases, surnames were adapted or translated as families moved between countries, which makes surname meanings an essential tool in tracing migration paths.

To learn more about how surnames changed across countries and time, take a look at our blog on Irish surnames and their origins.

Why Surname Research Is So Popular

People often begin family history research with their surname because it feels personal and familiar. A family name can lead to discoveries about migration, regional origins, occupations, and historic records connected with earlier generations.

Hall of Names specialises in surname history research with records covering over one million names.

Heraldry and Surname History

When researching a surname, the earliest coat of arms associated with a bearer of the name adds even more historical context. Each design includes colours, symbols, and mottos that reflect values, achievements, or allegiances from centuries ago.

Want to understand what these symbols mean? Read our guide on heraldic symbols and their meanings.

A Personalised Gift with Meaning
