Many people now use AI tools to create heraldic artwork and personalised shield designs. However, can somebody legally or historically create and claim their own coat of arms?

In most cases, the answer is no.

While anybody can design heraldic-style artwork for enjoyment or decoration, official coats of arms follow long-established heraldic rules and traditions. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, new coats of arms must be granted by the <a href=”https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/”>College of Arms</a>.

At Hall of Names, we increasingly see customers sending AI-generated heraldic designs for our artists to reproduce onto products such as shields and plaques. We are always happy to create decorative items from customer artwork. However, these designs should not be confused with officially recognised heraldry.

Quick summary

Anybody can create heraldic-style artwork for fun

AI tools can generate creative shield designs

Official coats of arms cannot simply be invented

Heraldry follows historical rules and legal traditions

Hall of Names products reference:
“the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname”

Coats of arms do not belong to entire families or surnames

How official coats of arms work

Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals, not entire families or surnames. Heraldic authorities granted or recognised these designs under strict rules.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the authority responsible for granting coats of arms is the College of Arms. Scotland operates separately through the Court of the Lord Lyon.

This means somebody cannot simply create a shield design online and officially claim it as their personal coat of arms without formal recognition.

AI heraldry and creative design

AI image generators have made heraldic design more accessible than ever. Many people enjoy experimenting with colours, animals, symbols and medieval-style shields.

Some customers even ask our artist to reproduce their AI-created designs onto our hand-painted shield or other decorative products.

We are always happy to help with this type of creative project. However, we believe it is important to explain the historical distinction clearly and responsibly.

Decorative heraldic artwork does not automatically become an official coat of arms.

Our High Gloss Shields feature coats of arms printed straight onto the wooden backing, and this look can also be achieved with AI imagery.

Learning about heraldry properly

For people interested in heraldry, learning the meaning behind traditional symbols can be fascinating. Our Heraldry Dictionary explains many common heraldic images and their historical meanings.

We also offer a free coat of arms template, allowing families, schools and enthusiasts to design their own heraldic-style artwork for educational and creative purposes.

This can be a fun way to explore symbolism, history and medieval design traditions.

Why historical accuracy matters

It is not true to say that everybody sharing a surname automatically shares the same coat of arms. And at Hall of Names, we believe historical accuracy matters.

Our products are based on the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. They are provided for historical interest, heritage appreciation and decorative enjoyment.

They should not be interpreted as proof of direct ancestry, legal ownership or genealogical entitlement.

Hall of Names and heraldic heritage

Hall of Names specialises in surname history, heraldry and heritage-inspired gifts. Our database contains over one million surnames, helping customers explore the history and symbolism linked to their name.

Customers can explore our printed scrolls , crystal gifts and personalised heraldic products online or in our Dunster shop.

Does creating a shield make it an official coat of arms?

Dunster School has recently completed a wonderful school heraldry project. We were delighted to hear that the children have been busy designing coats of arms ready for the celebrations. With the Dunster Winter Festival approaching on 6 and 7 December, pupils have been creating hearldic shields with a wide variety of colourful symbols. (You can use our free coat of arms template to design your own!) Their enthusiasm has been inspiring, and their artwork has shown real imagination. A huge well done to the staff and children who have been involved in this fantastic and creative project. We can see that imaginations have been let loose, with lots of symbols being used in the artworks.

Since opening our Dunster shop, we have enjoyed becoming part of the community, and the school is clearly one of the things at its heart. We hope that the children enjoyed exploring heraldry. Their creativity around the topic of coats of arms has reminded us why we enjoy sharing this subject. Under the leadership of Mr Paul James, the school website describes it as “a haven of learning… surrounded by breath-taking landscapes. As a happy, kind, and caring school, we are proud to be at the heart of our supportive community, unwavering in our commitment to place children at the centre of all we do.” Judging on this project, the children have been getting well and truly immersed in their work!

A fun project for schools and families

This school heraldry project is simple for teachers to organise and easy for families to try at home. Our free coat of arms template offers a clear starting point. It allows children to explore colour, symbols and meaning while learning about heraldic traditions. The children at Dunster have created theirs on cardboard shields which they will be able to carry. So you could copy their example and cut out a shape that you like. But equally you could do yours on a piece of A4 paper and cut it out afterwards.

Some children become curious about the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of their own surname. Families can explore further through our online dictionary of heraldry symbols, which explains the meaning behind many traditional images. This resource helps young learners choose symbols which they feel reflect their character or achievements.

Families can also browse our blog to learn more about surnames, heritage and the stories behind different coats of arms.

Looking ahead to the Dunster Winter Festival

This project forms part of the village’s preparations for the Dunster Winter Festival. The event brings the village together and offers a warm, festive atmosphere for residents and visitors. We are excited to take part for the first time since opening our doors and look forward to celebrating with the community.

Why Do Some Surnames Have a Coat of Arms and Others Don’t?

Many people wonder why some surnames appear to have a coat of arms while others do not. The answer lies in how heraldry developed. Historically, coats of arms were granted to individuals or specific family lines rather than to every person with the same surname. As surnames spread across different regions and generations, some became linked with historically recorded heraldic designs, while others did not. This guide explains why that happened and how surname heraldry is best understood today.

Updated April 2026 with additional FAQs and guidance from Hall of Names.

Whether you’re tracing your family tree or looking for a unique personalised gift, understanding the basics of heraldry can give real insight into your surname’s coat of arms — or lack of one. And if you don’t have one, you can even use our free coat of arms template to design your own – just for fun! What images might you choose to best reflect your history, personal traits or achievements.

Why Some Surnames Are Linked to Heraldry

Coats of arms were usually associated with individuals who held land, status, military roles, or civic importance. Their descendants or connected family branches sometimes continued to use adapted forms of those arms. Because surnames were also hereditary, some names became more strongly associated with heraldic records than others. However, that does not mean every bearer of a surname shared the same arms.

Heraldry Was Personal — Not Family-Wide

To understand this fully, it helps to go back in time. In the Middle Ages, authorities didn’t assign coats of arms to everyone who shared a surname. Instead, they were granted to individuals. These were often knights, members of the nobility or those who had performed some notable service.

Kings and nobles sometimes granted these designs by royal decree, making them legally recognised. The important point is that heraldry linked the design to the individual, not their descendants or everyone who shared the same name. So with this in mind, our Hall of Names database of coats of arms is for artwork / interest purposes only, rather than being the specific coat of arms of our individual customers.

Geography Played a Big Role

The likelihood of a surname having a coat of arms often depended on where your ancestors lived. In England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, heraldic traditions varied:

In England, heraldry was strictly regulated from the late 15th century

In Scotland, the Lord Lyon still oversees coats of arms, with very specific rules

In Ireland, arms were often granted to families of Gaelic or Norman origin

In Wales, many surnames evolved later or changed through anglicisation, reducing the number of documented arms

So, if your surname hails from a region where heraldry was less formalised or recorded, it’s entirely possible that no official coat of arms exists.

Discover the history of Welsh Surnames

Why Other Surnames May Have No Recorded Arms

Many perfectly respectable surnames have no formally recorded coat of arms. This may be because early bearers of the name were not armigerous, records were lost, or the surname developed in several separate places without one recognised heraldic line. Lack of recorded arms does not reduce the historical importance of a surname.

Records Weren’t Always Kept — or Survived

Another reason some surnames have no associated heraldry is simple: War, fire, or neglect may have caused the loss of important records. Entire family lines and their symbols were forgotten over time. Others may have existed only locally and were never formally registered.

That’s why when we at Hall of Names say that a name has a coat of arms, we mean:
“This is the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with someone who bore that surname.”

It’s not a modern invention, and it’s certainly not a generic or made-up crest. It reflects the heritage of those who came before. And it’s always fascinating to think of the possible connections that our customers surnames have to such distinguished heraldry.

Discover the Fascinating Story of Your Surname

How to Check If Your Surname Has a Related Coat of Arms

At Hall of Names, we hold a database of over one million surnames, collected from historic records across Europe. Using our free name search facility on each page of this website, you can instantly see if we hold a surname coat of arms for your family name.

In many cases, you’ll be able to choose from different country origins — for example, “Miller (Scottish)” versus “Miller (German, Dutch, Jewish or English).” Each variation reflects the earliest coat of arms that was recorded for someone of that name in that place.
If your surname doesn’t have a coat of arms listed, that doesn’t diminish the name’s value or interest. In fact, some of our best customers go on to purchase a framed surname history print — even without heraldry — because the story of the name itself is worth celebrating.

Surnames Can Have More Than One Design

Some surnames have several historically recorded heraldic designs linked to different branches, regions, or countries. This is common with widespread names that developed over many centuries. For this reason, heraldry should be approached as part of surname history rather than as one fixed image for every person sharing the name.

Quick Summary

Coats of arms were historically granted to individuals, not surnames.

Some surnames became linked to recorded heraldic lines.

Other surnames may have no surviving formal records.

Many surnames have more than one associated design.

Hall of Names researches surname history using records covering over one million names.

Does every surname have a coat of arms?

No. Many surnames have no formally recorded coat of arms, while others may have one or several designs linked to historical bearers of the name.

Why do some common surnames have several coats of arms?

Large surnames often developed in multiple places and family branches, leading to different heraldic associations over time.

If my surname has no coat of arms, does that matter?

Not at all. Surname history includes origins, migration, occupations, spelling changes, and social history beyond heraldry.

Can two unrelated families share the same surname?

Yes. Many surnames arose independently in different areas, so sharing a surname does not always mean shared ancestry.

How can I explore heraldry linked to my surname?

Many people begin with surname history research and historically recorded heraldic references connected with early bearers of the name.

Final Thoughts

Not every surname has a coat of arms, but every name has a story. Whether or not heraldry is part of your surname’s past, there are still countless ways to honour your family name.

Community groups across the UK are increasingly using heraldry to create strong visual identities that celebrate their history, values, and achievements. Whether you run a local sports club, charity, or organisation, adopting heraldic symbols like lions, stars, or crowns can help foster pride and belonging among members. At Hall of Names, we offer a wide range of printed shields and plaques perfect for groups wanting to showcase their unique identity.

Why Are Community Groups Using Heraldry?

Heraldry dates back centuries and traditionally represents family lineage and regional heritage. Today, many community organisations embrace heraldic imagery to visually communicate their mission, culture, and local roots. These symbols are timeless, instantly recognisable, and carry powerful meanings such as courage, unity, and achievement.

For community groups, using heraldry is more than just design — it’s a way to express shared values and build a legacy that members can connect with. A well-crafted crest or emblem can inspire loyalty and pride, whether displayed at clubhouses, events, or on merchandise.

Explore Heraldic Symbols and Their Meanings

If you’re considering adopting heraldic imagery for your group, it’s useful to understand the symbolism behind different elements. Our Heraldry Dictionary provides an easy guide to popular icons, such as:

What would best represent your group?

Lion — symbolising courage, pride, and strength

Star — representing honour, achievement, and hope

Mermaid — a favourite symbol for seafarers or anything related to the sea

Crown — an emblem of victory, sovereignty, and empire

Stag — indicating skill in music, a lover of harmony, and someone who foresees opportunities

Each symbol carries rich history and meaning, and combining them thoughtfully can create a unique crest that tells your group’s story at a glance. Using these symbols in your logo or badges can also provide conversation starters and deepen connections among members.

Sustainable personalised gifts are more in demand than ever, as shoppers seek meaningful purchases with minimal environmental impact. At Hall of Names, we believe gift-giving should feel good—both emotionally and ethically. Our mission is to offer high-quality, personalised gifts that tell a story and respect the planet.

We know our customers want value for money, especially in today’s economic climate. But equally, they care about sustainability, and want to buy gifts that are responsibly made and built to last. Here’s how we ensure our personalised gifts meet those high standards—both now and for the future.

Wendy is the owner of the business and she is hands-on in the creation of the scrolls.

A Smarter, Greener Workplace

After Covid, many businesses shifted to remote working—but as a manufacturer, we need to be hands-on. That said, we still wanted to reduce our environmental footprint. So, we chose to base our business in a small retail park on a farm in the beautiful Quantocks. The location allows our whole team to reach the office in minutes, not hours—cutting down on commuting time and emissions.

It’s not just about efficiency. Working in such a peaceful, rural environment has real mental health benefits. A quick glance out of the window across the hills can be the perfect antidote to a busy day.

The Coat of Arms: A Sustainable Personalised Gift – Best-Seller

We began our business with the Coat of Arms and Surname History, and it remains a best-seller to this day. It’s the perfect example of what we mean by sustainable personalised gifts.

Each print is produced on recyclable parchment-style paper, and our frames are sourced from a trusted UK supplier we’ve worked with for years. He delivers them in re-used banana boxes, which we recycle again afterwards. The pallets they arrive on? They’re repurposed by the farmer who owns our unit—and even the neighbouring goats have been known to clamber on them!

Our packaging has also been carefully thought through. We partnered with a local supplier to design a recyclable box specifically for our scrolls. It reduces waste, protects the product in transit, and makes it easy for customers to wrap if buying as a gift. It’s a small touch, but it makes a big difference.

Ethical Supply Chains and Trusted Relationships

As our product range expands, we make a conscious effort to work with ethical, UK-based suppliers who align with our values. For example, our crystal gifts are engraved by a highly reputable family business based in Middlesbrough, known for their skill and service.

One of our most valued collaborators is David, a specialist artist with over 40 years of experience in the industry. David expertly recreates coats of arms onto copper-resin templates, which are then mounted onto carefully selected backing options—all sourced locally to him in Surrey. His craftsmanship adds a distinctive, premium touch to our collection, and his work supports a broader network of local suppliers in the region. View David’s hand-painted coat of arms shields to see his work.

David has forty years’ experience creating coat of arms shields.

By shopping with Hall of Names, you’re not just purchasing a gift—you’re supporting a whole supply chain of skilled, independent specialists. This approach helps us maintain high quality, reduce our environmental footprint, and give back to communities across the UK.

This commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship means we consistently receive excellent customer reviews—and we’re proud to say that many of our customers come back to us year after year for their meaningful gifts.

Designed to Last, Not to Landfill

In a world dominated by throwaway culture, we believe gifts should be made to last. Our sustainable personalised gifts are designed to become treasured keepsakes—not things that end up in a drawer or the recycling bin.

Take our coat of arms sword, for example. Crafted by skilled artisans, it’s a dramatic, lasting piece that will be treasured for generations. Or our crystal decanter —elegant, personal, and destined to take pride of place in the home for years. The perfect choice to accompany our collection of crystal with coats of arms.

An Armorial Sword is an heirloom to treasure.

Our goal is to offer items that are not only personal, but timeless. Gifts that hold meaning long after the moment of unwrapping.

A Thoughtful Gift, A Lighter Footprint. Sustainable personalised gifts for all the family.

Every decision we make at Hall of Names—from packaging to partnerships—is rooted in a desire to offer truly sustainable personalised gifts. We know our customers care about the planet as much as they care about the people they’re buying for. And we’re proud to be a brand that reflects those values.
