Crest or Coat of Arms? What’s the Difference?

Many people use the terms “crest” and “coat of arms” interchangeably, but they are different. A coat of arms is a heraldic design granted to an individual, not a surname. It can sometimes be inherited along specific lines, but others sharing the surname are not automatically entitled to it.

A crest is a component of the full coat of arms, usually appearing above the helmet in a traditional design. Crests were originally used on helmets, seals, and badges to represent an individual’s identity or achievements. Common symbols used on crests include:

Animals such as lions or eagles, representing courage, strength, or vigilance

Objects like swords, crowns, or arrows, symbolizing military service or rank

Natural elements such as trees, stars, or flowers, denoting heritage, hope, or beauty

Understanding these symbols helps interpret the story the original bearer wanted to communicate.

If you’d like to understand more about the specific symbols, check our our heraldry symbols dictionary.

The History and Meaning of Coats of Arms

Coats of arms first appeared in Europe during the 12th century, primarily to identify knights in battle. Over time, they became more elaborate, serving as a visual record of achievements, allegiances, and social status.

The shield, the central part of a coat of arms, could be divided into sections, called partitions, to represent alliances, marriages, or achievements. For example:

Quartered shields show the merging of two family lines or significant inheritances

Striped or chevroned shields can indicate military accomplishments or leadership

Simple, undivided shields often emphasize the original family line

Each color and symbol carries meaning, creating a rich language of heraldic art. Gold might signify generosity, blue loyalty, and red courage. Lions, crosses, or crowns all communicate specific qualities admired in the bearer.

For Scottish surnames, coats of arms and crests are often connected with clan history. Many families also have clan badges, incorporating elements from the arms or crest to show allegiance.

It’s fascinating to discover the history of your Scottish Clan name

Many presents are enjoyed for a moment, then quietly forgotten. However, some gifts stay in a home for years and become part of family life. That is often why family crest gifts remain such a popular choice. At least that’s what our customers tell us.

A well-chosen print can feel personal, thoughtful and lasting. It can celebrate a name, honour family history and add character to a room. Therefore, many people choose surname history prints for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. We’ve been told often that our gifts offer something for everyone, especially people that are hard to buy for. Music to our ears as we aim to have a selection of gifts for every taste and pocket.

At Hall of Names, our printed gifts collection has become one of our most loved ranges. Many visitors search for a family crest gift. Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals. And therefore, our prints feature the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname.

Why Printed Gifts Still Matter

In a digital world, printed gifts often feel more meaningful. They are made to be seen each day, rather than stored away in a drawer. As a result, they continue to bring enjoyment long after the occasion has passed.

A framed surname history print can hang proudly in a hallway, study or living room. It often becomes a talking point when guests visit. It may also inspire conversations about family stories, places and traditions. Plus you can order online, or pop in to see us at our Dunster shop and we can print your scroll while you wait! Dunster is looking particularly glorious at the moment.

Dunster residents and businesses create lovely floral displays for visitors.

Unlike many short-lived presents, a quality print has staying power. It becomes part of the home and part of the memories made there. That said, our prints can also be emailed in digital format – perfect for those living outside of the UK or for customers wishing to print out copies of their own. Just select your desired option from the dropdown menu.

Our Most Popular Family Crest Gifts

Our Prints & Scrolls collection includes several styles to suit different homes and tastes.

Framed Surname History Prints

These remain our bestselling option. Each print includes surname history details and a historically recorded heraldic design linked to the surname.

Customers can choose from oak, antique gold, black or dark and gold frames. Oak offers a warm, classic look. Gold feels elegant and traditional. Black suits modern interiors beautifully. The dark frame with gold inlay always remains a popular choice, and is our best-seller.

Dad can discover all about the history of his surname with our best-selling coat of arms print.

Unframed Scroll Prints

Some customers prefer flexibility. An unframed scroll allows the recipient to choose their own frame style later. It also makes gifting and posting simple. Plus of course it only costs £24.99.

Double Coat of Arms Prints

These designs are especially popular for weddings and anniversaries. Two surnames appear together in one personalised print, creating a thoughtful keepsake for couples. View the double coat of arms print here.

Family Crest Gifts for Life’s Important Moments

Family crest gifts work well for many occasions because they feel personal and considered.

Popular choices include:

birthdays

weddings

anniversaries

retirements

housewarmings

Christmas gifts

Because each print is linked to a surname, it often feels more meaningful than a standard present.

Why They Create Lasting Memories

Many gifts are enjoyed once and then forgotten. A framed print is different because it remains visible every day. It can mark a wedding date, celebrate a family name or remind someone of their roots.

Years later, people often remember who gave it to them and why. That is what turns a present into a memory. And, fro a small extra fee, you can add your own wording to a print. For example, if you are giving it to commemorate the achievements of a friend or loved one, you could include their details. Or you might wish to include a special person and a significant date. The possibilities are endless.

Visit Hall of Names

Hall of Names holds records for over one million surnames. We also welcome visitors to our shop in Dunster, where many designs can be viewed in person. Dunster is a beautiful medieval village within the beautiful countryside of West Somerset, on the doorstep of Exmoor. View the Dunster website here.

Have you ever left a review after visiting an independent shop, café or attraction?

If so, you may not realise just how much your feedback helps. A single review can encourage someone to visit a business they might otherwise have walked past, while also giving small independent businesses like ours the confidence to continue doing what they love.

At Hall of Names, we genuinely believe that every review matters. If you could take a couple of minutes to leave your thoughts about our products or service, it will help us enormously and here’s how.

Quick Summary – Reviews matter!

Reviews help people discover independent businesses.

Honest feedback builds confidence for future visitors.

Reviews support local shops and communities.

A few minutes can make a real difference.

We appreciate every review, wherever you choose to leave it.

So for example, if you have purchased a surname history scroll from us and want to tell others about your experience, you could leave a review on the product page itself. Our home village of Dunster is full of independent stores – take a look at the Dunster Village Website here.

Why Reviews Are So Important

Do you ever check out the reviews before you buy a product or visit a place? Us too! In fact, most of us read reviews before visiting somewhere new or making a purchase. So we all know how useful they can be to help make an informed decision.

Whether we’re choosing a present for a friend, a hotel, restaurant, attraction or gift shop, reviews help us decide where to spend our time and money.

For independent businesses like ours, they are especially valuable. Unlike large national retailers with big budgets, many small businesses rely on recommendations from happy customers.

Your experience can help someone else discover a place they may never have found otherwise.

Every Review Tells a Story

A review is about much more than a star rating.

It tells future visitors what made your experience memorable.

Perhaps you discovered something fascinating about your surname. Maybe you found the perfect personalised gift, or perhaps you simply enjoyed browsing our shop and chatting about family history and heraldry. The stories we have heard in our Dunster Hall of Names shop! (We know more than most that every family has skeletons in the cupboard!)

Whatever stood out to you could be exactly what encourages someone else to call in during their visit to Dunster.

Supporting Independent Businesses

Dunster’s famous Yarn Market amidst its wealth of independent shops.

Independent businesses are at the heart of communities across the UK.

They bring character to our high streets, offer specialist knowledge and create experiences that are often very different from those found in larger chain stores.

When you leave a review, you’re helping to support that diversity. You’re encouraging people to explore independent businesses and helping them make informed choices about where to visit.

A Word from Wendy

“One of the loveliest parts of running Hall of Names is meeting people from all over the UK and around the world,” says Wendy Spencer, owner of Hall of Names. “We spend time talking to visitors about their surname, family history and heraldry, and it’s always rewarding when someone tells us they enjoyed their visit. If people take a few minutes to leave a review afterwards, it really does help an independent business like ours continue to grow.”

Where Can You Leave a Review?

If you’ve enjoyed visiting Hall of Names, there are several ways you can share your experience.

Why do people change their surnames? The reasons are surprisingly varied. Some surnames change through migration, marriage or adoption, while others evolve because of spelling variations, clerical errors or personal choice.

Many people assume surnames remain unchanged throughout history. In reality, family names often develop and evolve over generations, creating the fascinating variety of surnames we see today. And we have a million of them on our Hall of Names database, which is free for you to check at the top of this page.

Quick Summary

Surnames have changed for centuries.

Migration often led to new spellings.

Marriage and adoption can result in surname changes.

Clerical errors sometimes created permanent variations.

Modern families may choose double-barrelled or blended surnames.

Immigration and Migration

One of the most common reasons people change surname spellings is migration.

When families moved to a new country, officials often recorded names differently. In some cases, surnames were simplified to make them easier to pronounce or spell.

Irish, Scottish, Welsh and European surnames frequently changed as families settled in Britain, North America, Australia and elsewhere.

As a result, modern descendants may discover that an ancestor used a different version of the family name several generations ago.

Spelling Was Not Always Consistent

Today, most people use a standard spelling for their surname. Historically, this was not always the case.

Many people could not read or write, and spelling was far less standardised than it is today. A surname might appear differently in parish registers, census returns and legal documents depending on who recorded it. This even includes famous names such as Shakespeare.

This is one reason why names such as Clarke and Clark, Smith and Smyth, or MacDonald and McDonald can exist side by side.

In some cases, these spelling variations eventually became permanent surnames.

Marriage, Adoption and Family Circumstances

Not all surname changes happened hundreds of years ago.

Many people change their surname following marriage, while others choose to retain their original surname or adopt a double-barrelled version.

Adoption can also lead to a surname change, creating a new chapter in a family’s story. In other situations, people may take the surname of a step-parent or another family member who has played an important role in their life.

Modern surnames often reflect personal circumstances as much as historical traditions.

Creating New Surnames

Surname traditions continue to evolve today.

Some couples create double-barrelled surnames that combine both family names. Others develop entirely new blended surnames that reflect both sides of the family.

While these practices are relatively modern, they demonstrate that surnames remain a living part of our identity rather than something fixed forever.

LINK: Double-Barrelled and Blended Surnames Blog

Surnames Are Not Always Straightforward

Here at Hall of Names, we often meet customers in our Dunster shop who explain that their surname has changed somewhere along the family line.

Sometimes this happened generations ago through migration or marriage. In other cases, people have been adopted, chosen to use a step-parent’s surname or created a new family name altogether.

A Word from Wendy Spencer, owner of Hall of Names.

One of the things we learn very quickly is that surnames are not always as straightforward as people think, we regularly speak to visitors in our Dunster shop who tell us their surname changed somewhere in the family story. Sometimes there has been an adoption, sometimes a marriage, and sometimes a family simply chose a different spelling or a completely new surname. Every family has its own story, which is one of the reasons surname history is so fascinating.”

Explore More Surname History

One of the reasons surname history remains so popular is that no two family stories are exactly the same.

Here at Hall of Names, we have published a wide variety of articles exploring surname history, family heritage and genealogy. Many of these have been written by guest contributors from trusted publications and specialist family history writers, helping us provide readers with a broad range of perspectives and expertise.

For example, Historic UK contributed an article exploring the Origins of Welsh Surnames and naming traditions. Other articles examine Scottish clans, Irish surnames, heraldry and family history topics from across Britain and beyond.

Whether you are researching the origins of your surname, exploring Scottish or Irish ancestry, or simply curious about how names evolved over time, our growing collection of surname-related articles offers plenty of inspiration for further research.

LINK: Hall of Names Blog

LINK: Origins of Welsh Surnames

Why Surname History Matters

Understanding why people change surname traditions can help uncover fascinating details about family history.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping customers explore surname origins, historical records and heraldic traditions connected to their name.

Researching a surname is often the first step towards discovering a much wider family story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people change their surnames?

People change their surnames for many reasons, including migration, marriage, adoption, spelling variations and personal choice.

Did immigration cause surnames to change?

Yes. Many surnames were altered or simplified when families moved to a new country.

Why do some surnames have more than one coat of arms? The answer lies in how heraldry developed. Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals rather than entire surnames. Over the centuries, different people with the same surname could acquire, inherit or be granted different heraldic arms.

This often surprises people researching a surname coat of arms for the first time. However, understanding how heraldry worked helps explain why several designs can appear in historical records for the same name.

Quick Summary

Coats of arms belonged to individuals.

People sharing a surname were not always related.

Different family branches could use different heraldic arms.

New grants of arms were issued over many centuries.

Several historically recorded arms can be linked to one surname.

Coats of Arms Were Not Created for Surnames

One of the biggest misconceptions about heraldry is the idea that every surname has one official coat of arms.

In reality, coats of arms were granted to individuals. Those arms could pass to descendants according to heraldic rules. However, they did not automatically belong to everyone who happened to share the same surname.

As a result, several heraldic designs may become associated with a single name over time.

Understanding this distinction is important when researching family history and heraldry.

This is one reason why different coats of arms can become associated with a single surname. Here at Hall of Names, our surname history prints feature the earliest coat of arms on record for the name.

Different Family Branches Developed Different Arms

As families grew and spread across the country, separate branches often emerged.

In some cases, younger branches adopted variations of existing arms. In others, entirely new arms were granted. These differences helped distinguish one branch from another while maintaining a connection to the family’s history.

Consequently, historical records often show several heraldic designs connected to the same surname.

Rather than being contradictory, these records reflect the evolution of heraldry over many generations.

Unrelated Families Can Share the Same Surname

Another important factor is that many surnames developed independently.

Occupational surnames such as Smith, Baker and Taylor appeared in many locations. The same happened with place-name surnames and patronymic surnames.

As we discussed in our article Are All People With the Same Surname Related?, sharing a surname does not automatically mean sharing an ancestor.

This also means that different families with the same surname could possess completely different heraldic traditions.

Why Hall of Names Uses the Earliest Recorded Arms

At Hall of Names, historical accuracy is important.

For this reason, our products feature the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname that we have identified in our research.

This approach provides customers with a historically interesting representation of heraldic heritage while avoiding the misconception that a coat of arms belongs to an entire surname.

The design should be viewed as a historically recorded heraldic association rather than proof of direct descent or ownership.

What About Family Crests?

The word “crest” often causes confusion.

Strictly speaking, the crest forms only one part of a complete heraldic achievement. However, many people use the term “family crest” when referring to an entire coat of arms.

This misunderstanding can sometimes lead people to believe that every surname has one official crest or one official coat of arms.

Historically, the situation was much more complex.

Read The Difference Between a Coat of Arms and Family Crest

Why Historical Context Matters

Heraldry developed over many centuries. During that time, families moved, branches separated and new grants of arms were issued.

As a result, it is perfectly normal to find different coats of arms associated with the same surname in historical records.

Rather than seeing this as a contradiction, it should be viewed as evidence of the rich and varied history behind many names.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping visitors explore surname origins, heraldry and family history in a historically responsible way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can one surname have several coats of arms?

Because coats of arms belonged to individuals rather than entire surnames. Different people with the same surname could acquire different arms.

Does everyone with the same surname share the same coat of arms?

No. Sharing a surname does not automatically create a heraldic connection.

Which coat of arms is the correct one?

Several historically recorded coats of arms may exist for a surname. Context and historical records are important.

Can multiple coats of arms all be genuine?

Yes. Different historical grants and family branches can create multiple legitimate heraldic designs linked to the same surname.

What do you buy the dad who has everything? It is a question many people ask every Father’s Day. After all, if he already has plenty of socks, mugs, chocolates and gadgets, finding something meaningful can feel almost impossible. But don’t worry because we are here to help!

The good news is that the best Father’s Day gifts are not always the most expensive. Often, they are the gifts that tell a story, spark a conversation or create a lasting connection to family history and heritage.

Quick Summary of the issue!

Many dads already have the usual Father’s Day gifts.

Personalised gifts often feel more meaningful.

Family history gifts can create lasting memories.

Heritage-inspired presents offer something different.

Thoughtful gifts are often remembered long after Father’s Day.

Why Dads Can Be So Difficult to Buy For

Many fathers reach a stage where they simply buy the things they need for themselves. As a result, choosing a gift becomes more challenging every year.

At the same time, many people want to give something more personal than another pair of socks or a bottle of beer. They want a gift that reflects the recipient’s interests, personality and family story.

This is why personalised and heritage-inspired gifts continue to grow in popularity.

A whisky tumbler makes a great gift and we have a choice of colour or engraved heraldry.

The Appeal of Family History Gifts

Family history has never been more popular. Television programmes, genealogy websites and online archives have encouraged many people to learn more about their ancestors.

A gift connected to family heritage offers something unique. It provides an opportunity to discover surname origins, historical records and fascinating stories from the past.

For many fathers, these gifts become treasured keepsakes that can be displayed and enjoyed for years. For example our Printed Scrolls offer a real insight into the history and meaning of Dad’s surname and its earliest known coat of arms.

Gifts That Tell a Story

The most memorable presents often have a story behind them.

A surname history print, for example, combines researched surname information with the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. It creates an interesting talking point and a meaningful display piece for the home.

Similarly, personalised gifts featuring heraldic artwork can celebrate family heritage in a way that feels thoughtful and distinctive.

Rather than giving a gift that is quickly forgotten, many people now look for items that create a stronger emotional connection.

More Than Just Prints

While surname history prints remain one of our most popular Father’s Day gifts, they are not the only option.

Many customers also choose engraved crystal gifts, whisky tumblers, decanters, shields and plaques, or personalised watches and clocks inspired by heraldry and family history.

These gifts combine practical use with personal meaning, making them suitable for fathers, grandfathers and family historians alike.

Crystal & Glass

Ideas for Father’s Day

Why Meaningful Gifts Matter

A thoughtful gift shows that time and effort have gone into the decision.

It demonstrates that the recipient’s interests and personal story have been considered. In many cases, that thoughtfulness matters far more than the price tag.

As Father’s Day approaches, many families are looking for gifts that celebrate memories, heritage and shared experiences. Family history provides a natural way to make that connection.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping people explore the origins and stories behind their name while discovering unique gift ideas inspired by heritage.

Since moving into our shop in Dunster, we have been thinking about how we can offer something truly special for the local community. We wanted to create a focal point that celebrates the village and gives visitors a meaningful way to remember their time here.

That is why we have commissioned a brand new Dunster artwork, which will be arriving very soon.

Created especially for Hall of Names by artist Lucy Loveheart, this piece promises to capture the spirit of Dunster in a joyful and distinctive way. While the artwork is not yet in place, we are excited to share a preview of what is to come.

A celebration of Dunster and its landmarks

This new Dunster artwork will feature a stylised view of the village and its surroundings. It brings together many of Dunster’s most recognisable landmarks, including Dunster Castle, the Packhorse Bridge and the West Somerset Railway.

It also reflects the natural beauty of the area, from the rolling Exmoor hills to the coastline and surrounding landscape. Alongside these features, the artwork will highlight the independent shops and businesses that give Dunster its unique character.

Lucy Loveheart’s style is full of colour, movement and charm. Her work feels lively and uplifting, offering a fresh perspective on a place that so many people love to visit.

The piece also draws inspiration from the local landscape that inspired the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, adding another layer of meaning to the design.

Inspiring a new range of gifts

This Dunster artwork will not just be a single piece on display. It will form the inspiration for a brand new range of products, which we will be introducing in the coming months.

These items will sit alongside our existing collections, including our printed scrolls, crystal and glass gifts, and shields and plaques. As always, our products reflect heritage, storytelling and the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of each surname.

This new direction allows us to offer something completely different. It gives visitors the chance to take home a unique memento of Dunster, inspired by a design that cannot be found anywhere else.

A growing connection with the Dunster community

Since opening our shop, we have enjoyed building strong connections within the Dunster community. This artwork reflects that relationship and brings together familiar places and shared experiences into one design.

We have worked closely with Lucy, sharing ideas and inspiration drawn from our shop, our customers and the village itself. As a result, the finished artwork promises to feel both personal and meaningful.

Watch this space

We are incredibly excited about what is coming next. The artwork will be arriving soon, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

We will be revealing the piece in the near future, along with the first products inspired by it. If you are interested in Dunster, local heritage or unique gifts, this is something to look out for.

Please keep an eye on our updates, follow along with our journey and share this with anyone who loves Dunster as much as we do.

Visit us in Dunster

If you are visiting Dunster, do come and see us. We would love to welcome you into our shop and share more about what we have planned.

What Are Scottish Septs?

In Scotland, many surnames are connected to larger clans as what are called septs. A sept is a family or group of families who may not share the same surname as the clan chief but historically owed allegiance to the clan.

Septs were often smaller branches of a clan, families living in the same area, or households brought under the protection of a chief. This system allowed clans to grow, form alliances, and strengthen ties across regions.

For example, the MacLaren clan historically included septs such as McFarlane and McLachlan. These families were connected to the clan through loyalty, shared ancestry, or protection agreements, even if their surnames differed.

Why Septs Matter in Heraldry

Septs do not automatically have the legal right to the clan chief’s coat of arms. The Lord Lyon King of Arms grants arms to individuals, not surnames or clans. However, members of septs often use a crest badge or elements from the chief’s heraldic symbols to show their connection.

These badges may include:

Crests from the chief’s arms

Plants or heraldic symbols indicating allegiance or shared heritage

Strap-and-buckle designs encircling the crest to show it belongs to the clan chief

This distinction is important: sept members can display a badge symbolically, but it does not give legal entitlement to the arms themselves.

Is your Scottish name affiliated to a clan?

Our Scottish Clan History Print is ideal for exploring the history of a clan, including its symbols, crest, and associated families. If your surname is actually the clan name, this print gives a full picture of your clan’s heritage and heraldic symbolism.

However, if your surname is a sept of a larger clan, the Clan History Print will show the history of the main clan rather than your surname specifically. In that case, the Coat of Arms and Surname History Print is the better choice. It focuses on the earliest recorded arms linked to your own surname, giving detailed history, symbolism, and context specific to your name.
