Why do some surnames have more than one coat of arms? The answer lies in how heraldry developed. Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals rather than entire surnames. Over the centuries, different people with the same surname could acquire, inherit or be granted different heraldic arms.

This often surprises people researching a surname coat of arms for the first time. However, understanding how heraldry worked helps explain why several designs can appear in historical records for the same name.

Quick Summary

Coats of arms belonged to individuals.

People sharing a surname were not always related.

Different family branches could use different heraldic arms.

New grants of arms were issued over many centuries.

Several historically recorded arms can be linked to one surname.

Coats of Arms Were Not Created for Surnames

One of the biggest misconceptions about heraldry is the idea that every surname has one official coat of arms.

In reality, coats of arms were granted to individuals. Those arms could pass to descendants according to heraldic rules. However, they did not automatically belong to everyone who happened to share the same surname.

As a result, several heraldic designs may become associated with a single name over time.

Understanding this distinction is important when researching family history and heraldry.

This is one reason why different coats of arms can become associated with a single surname. Here at Hall of Names, our surname history prints feature the earliest coat of arms on record for the name.

Different Family Branches Developed Different Arms

As families grew and spread across the country, separate branches often emerged.

In some cases, younger branches adopted variations of existing arms. In others, entirely new arms were granted. These differences helped distinguish one branch from another while maintaining a connection to the family’s history.

Consequently, historical records often show several heraldic designs connected to the same surname.

Rather than being contradictory, these records reflect the evolution of heraldry over many generations.

Unrelated Families Can Share the Same Surname

Another important factor is that many surnames developed independently.

Occupational surnames such as Smith, Baker and Taylor appeared in many locations. The same happened with place-name surnames and patronymic surnames.

As we discussed in our article Are All People With the Same Surname Related?, sharing a surname does not automatically mean sharing an ancestor.

This also means that different families with the same surname could possess completely different heraldic traditions.

Why Hall of Names Uses the Earliest Recorded Arms

At Hall of Names, historical accuracy is important.

For this reason, our products feature the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname that we have identified in our research.

This approach provides customers with a historically interesting representation of heraldic heritage while avoiding the misconception that a coat of arms belongs to an entire surname.

The design should be viewed as a historically recorded heraldic association rather than proof of direct descent or ownership.

What About Family Crests?

The word “crest” often causes confusion.

Strictly speaking, the crest forms only one part of a complete heraldic achievement. However, many people use the term “family crest” when referring to an entire coat of arms.

This misunderstanding can sometimes lead people to believe that every surname has one official crest or one official coat of arms.

Historically, the situation was much more complex.

Read The Difference Between a Coat of Arms and Family Crest

Why Historical Context Matters

Heraldry developed over many centuries. During that time, families moved, branches separated and new grants of arms were issued.

As a result, it is perfectly normal to find different coats of arms associated with the same surname in historical records.

Rather than seeing this as a contradiction, it should be viewed as evidence of the rich and varied history behind many names.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping visitors explore surname origins, heraldry and family history in a historically responsible way.

Why can one surname have several coats of arms?

Because coats of arms belonged to individuals rather than entire surnames. Different people with the same surname could acquire different arms.

Does everyone with the same surname share the same coat of arms?

No. Sharing a surname does not automatically create a heraldic connection.

Which coat of arms is the correct one?

Several historically recorded coats of arms may exist for a surname. Context and historical records are important.

We use the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname identified during our research.

Can multiple coats of arms all be genuine?

Yes. Different historical grants and family branches can create multiple legitimate heraldic designs linked to the same surname.

Why do so many Irish surnames start with O’? The answer lies in Ireland’s ancient naming traditions. The prefix O’ originally meant “descendant of” and helped identify a person’s connection to an ancestor or family group.

Today, surnames such as O’Brien, O’Connor and O’Sullivan are recognised around the world. However, their origins stretch back many centuries and tell an important story about Irish heritage, family identity and social structure.

Quick Summary

O’ means “descendant of”.

The prefix developed in early medieval Ireland.

Many Irish families later dropped the O’.

Some restored it during the Irish cultural revival.

O’ surnames remain an important part of Irish identity today.

The Meaning of O’ in Irish Surnames

The prefix O’ comes from the Irish word “Ó”, meaning “grandson” or “descendant”. It identified a person as belonging to a particular family line.

For example, O’Brien means “descendant of Brien”, while O’Connor means “descendant of Conchobhar”.

These names helped distinguish one family group from another at a time when communities were organised around kinship and ancestry.

As Irish society developed, these hereditary surnames became established and passed from one generation to the next.

Ireland Was One of the First Countries to Use Hereditary Surnames

Many people are surprised to learn that Ireland was among the first countries in Europe to adopt hereditary surnames.

By the tenth and eleventh centuries, Irish families were already using surnames that would continue through future generations. This happened long before hereditary surnames became common in many other parts of Europe.

As a result, some Irish surnames can be traced back more than a thousand years.

Why Did Some Families Lose the O’?

Not every Irish surname still carries its original prefix.

During periods of English administration, many Irish names were anglicised. In some cases, prefixes such as O’ and Mac disappeared altogether.

For example:

O’Neill became Neill

O’Doherty became Doherty

O’Sullivan became Sullivan

Some families removed the prefix voluntarily to make their names easier to spell or pronounce. Others experienced changes through official records and administration.

Consequently, modern Irish surnames often exist in several different forms.

Why Were Some Prefixes Restored?

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, interest in Irish language and culture grew significantly.

This period saw many families restore traditional forms of their surnames. As Irish national identity strengthened, prefixes such as O’ and Mac became symbols of cultural heritage.

Today, both versions of many surnames continue to exist.

For example, you may encounter both Sullivan and O’Sullivan, depending on the family’s history.

What Is the Difference Between O’ and Mac?

While O’ means “descendant of”, the prefix Mac means “son of”.

Both developed as part of Ireland’s naming traditions.

Examples include:

MacCarthy

MacMahon

MacDonnell

Over time, both O’ and Mac surnames became hereditary family names and remain common throughout Ireland and among Irish communities around the world.

Irish Migration Spread These Names Worldwide

Irish migration helped carry O’ surnames far beyond Ireland’s shores.

Large numbers of Irish people settled in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. As they moved, they brought their family names and traditions with them.

Today, Irish surnames are among the most recognised names in the English-speaking world.

Many people researching their family history discover Irish ancestry through their surname and then begin exploring historical records, migration patterns and family stories.

Why Irish Surname History Remains Fascinating

Irish surnames provide a direct connection to centuries of history. They reveal clues about ancestry, language and cultural identity.

At Hall of Names, we have spent many years researching surname history and heraldry. Our database contains over one million surnames, including thousands of Irish names and traditional sept histories.

Many visitors begin by exploring the history of their surname before continuing their own family history research.

What do you buy the dad who has everything? It is a question many people ask every Father’s Day. After all, if he already has plenty of socks, mugs, chocolates and gadgets, finding something meaningful can feel almost impossible. But don’t worry because we are here to help!

The good news is that the best Father’s Day gifts are not always the most expensive. Often, they are the gifts that tell a story, spark a conversation or create a lasting connection to family history and heritage.

Quick Summary of the issue!

Many dads already have the usual Father’s Day gifts.

Personalised gifts often feel more meaningful.

Family history gifts can create lasting memories.

Heritage-inspired presents offer something different.

Thoughtful gifts are often remembered long after Father’s Day.

Why Dads Can Be So Difficult to Buy For

Many fathers reach a stage where they simply buy the things they need for themselves. As a result, choosing a gift becomes more challenging every year.

At the same time, many people want to give something more personal than another pair of socks or a bottle of beer. They want a gift that reflects the recipient’s interests, personality and family story.

This is why personalised and heritage-inspired gifts continue to grow in popularity.

A whisky tumbler makes a great gift and we have a choice of colour or engraved heraldry.

The Appeal of Family History Gifts

Family history has never been more popular. Television programmes, genealogy websites and online archives have encouraged many people to learn more about their ancestors.

A gift connected to family heritage offers something unique. It provides an opportunity to discover surname origins, historical records and fascinating stories from the past.

For many fathers, these gifts become treasured keepsakes that can be displayed and enjoyed for years. For example our Printed Scrolls offer a real insight into the history and meaning of Dad’s surname and its earliest known coat of arms.

Gifts That Tell a Story

The most memorable presents often have a story behind them.

A surname history print, for example, combines researched surname information with the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. It creates an interesting talking point and a meaningful display piece for the home.

Similarly, personalised gifts featuring heraldic artwork can celebrate family heritage in a way that feels thoughtful and distinctive.

Rather than giving a gift that is quickly forgotten, many people now look for items that create a stronger emotional connection.

More Than Just Prints

While surname history prints remain one of our most popular Father’s Day gifts, they are not the only option.

Many customers also choose engraved crystal gifts, whisky tumblers, decanters, shields and plaques, or personalised watches and clocks inspired by heraldry and family history.

These gifts combine practical use with personal meaning, making them suitable for fathers, grandfathers and family historians alike.

Crystal & Glass

Watches & Clocks

Ideas for Father’s Day

Why Meaningful Gifts Matter

A thoughtful gift shows that time and effort have gone into the decision.

It demonstrates that the recipient’s interests and personal story have been considered. In many cases, that thoughtfulness matters far more than the price tag.

As Father’s Day approaches, many families are looking for gifts that celebrate memories, heritage and shared experiences. Family history provides a natural way to make that connection.

At Hall of Names, our database contains over one million surnames, helping people explore the origins and stories behind their name while discovering unique gift ideas inspired by heritage.

Are all people with the same surname related? The simple answer is no, not always. While some people who share a surname can trace their ancestry back to a common ancestor, many surnames developed independently in different places and among unrelated families.

This is one of the most common questions asked by people researching their family history. The answer reveals a fascinating story about how surnames developed and spread over time.

Quick Summary

Some people with the same surname are related.

Many common surnames developed independently.

Rare surnames are more likely to indicate a shared ancestry.

Sharing a surname does not automatically mean sharing a coat of arms.

How Surnames Developed

Most hereditary surnames emerged between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. As populations grew, communities needed better ways to distinguish between people who shared the same first name.

As a result, surnames often developed from occupations, places, personal characteristics or the name of a parent. Over time, these descriptions became hereditary and passed from one generation to the next.

However, the same surname could arise in multiple locations without any connection between the families involved.

Why Common Surnames Often Have Multiple Origins

Consider the surname Smith. A blacksmith in Yorkshire might become known as John Smith, while an unrelated blacksmith in Devon could receive exactly the same surname.

The same pattern occurred with names such as Baker, Taylor, Cooper and Carter. These occupational surnames appeared wherever the trade existed. Consequently, many people sharing these names today have no direct family connection.

The same principle applies to surnames based on locations. Someone living near a hill, wood or river might acquire a surname linked to that feature. Meanwhile, a completely unrelated family elsewhere could develop the same name.

What About Welsh and Irish Surnames?

Patronymic surnames developed from a father’s first name. Examples include Jones, Williams, Evans and many surnames beginning with Mac or Mc.

Because names such as John, William and Evan were extremely common, many unrelated families adopted the same surname. Therefore, sharing one of these names does not necessarily indicate a common ancestor.

This is particularly important when researching Welsh and Irish heritage, where patronymic naming traditions remained common for many centuries.

Rare Surnames Tell a Different Story

Rare surnames often have fewer points of origin. In some cases, a surname may have originated in a single village, region or family group before spreading more widely.

For this reason, people who share an unusual surname are often more likely to be connected. However, proper genealogical research is still required before drawing conclusions.

https://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/Historical records, census returns, parish registers and family documents all play an important role in confirming family connections. Sites such as Ancestry can help with this, and Magazines like Who Do You Think You Are? and Family Tree Magazine.

Does Sharing a Surname Mean Sharing a Coat of Arms?

This is another common misconception.

Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals rather than entire surnames or families. Sharing a surname does not automatically give somebody the right to use a particular coat of arms.

At Hall of Names, our products feature the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. These designs provide an interesting insight into heraldic history, but they should not be interpreted as proof of direct ancestry or ownership.

Understanding this distinction helps preserve the historical accuracy of heraldry while allowing people to enjoy the fascinating stories connected to their surname.

View our Surname History Prints Here.

Why Surname History Matters

Researching surname history helps us understand where names came from, how families moved around the country and how communities developed over time.

At Hall of Names, we have spent many years researching surname origins and heraldry. Our database contains over one million surnames, helping customers discover the history, meaning and heritage connected to their name.

Many visitors begin their journey by exploring surname histories and then continue researching their own family tree through historical records and genealogy resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all people with the same surname related?

No. Many common surnames developed independently among unrelated families.

Are people with rare surnames more likely to be related?

Often yes, although proper genealogical research is still needed to confirm a connection.

Can a surname prove I am related to someone?

A surname can provide clues, but it cannot prove a family connection on its own.

Do people with the same surname share a coat of arms?

No. Coats of arms historically belonged to individuals, not entire surnames.

How can I learn more about my surname?

Historical records, genealogy research and surname histories are all useful starting points.

Many people now use AI tools to create heraldic artwork and personalised shield designs. However, can somebody legally or historically create and claim their own coat of arms?

In most cases, the answer is no.

While anybody can design heraldic-style artwork for enjoyment or decoration, official coats of arms follow long-established heraldic rules and traditions. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, new coats of arms must be granted by the <a href=”https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/”>College of Arms</a>.

At Hall of Names, we increasingly see customers sending AI-generated heraldic designs for our artists to reproduce onto products such as shields and plaques. We are always happy to create decorative items from customer artwork. However, these designs should not be confused with officially recognised heraldry.

Quick summary

Anybody can create heraldic-style artwork for fun

AI tools can generate creative shield designs

Official coats of arms cannot simply be invented

Heraldry follows historical rules and legal traditions

Hall of Names products reference:
“the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname”

Coats of arms do not belong to entire families or surnames

How official coats of arms work

Historically, coats of arms belonged to individuals, not entire families or surnames. Heraldic authorities granted or recognised these designs under strict rules.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the authority responsible for granting coats of arms is the College of Arms. Scotland operates separately through the Court of the Lord Lyon.

This means somebody cannot simply create a shield design online and officially claim it as their personal coat of arms without formal recognition.

AI heraldry and creative design

AI image generators have made heraldic design more accessible than ever. Many people enjoy experimenting with colours, animals, symbols and medieval-style shields.

Some customers even ask our artist to reproduce their AI-created designs onto our hand-painted shield or other decorative products.

We are always happy to help with this type of creative project. However, we believe it is important to explain the historical distinction clearly and responsibly.

Decorative heraldic artwork does not automatically become an official coat of arms.

Our High Gloss Shields feature coats of arms printed straight onto the wooden backing, and this look can also be achieved with AI imagery.

Learning about heraldry properly

For people interested in heraldry, learning the meaning behind traditional symbols can be fascinating. Our Heraldry Dictionary explains many common heraldic images and their historical meanings.

We also offer a free coat of arms template, allowing families, schools and enthusiasts to design their own heraldic-style artwork for educational and creative purposes.

This can be a fun way to explore symbolism, history and medieval design traditions.

Why historical accuracy matters

It is not true to say that everybody sharing a surname automatically shares the same coat of arms. And at Hall of Names, we believe historical accuracy matters.

Our products are based on the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of the surname. They are provided for historical interest, heritage appreciation and decorative enjoyment.

They should not be interpreted as proof of direct ancestry, legal ownership or genealogical entitlement.

Hall of Names and heraldic heritage

Hall of Names specialises in surname history, heraldry and heritage-inspired gifts. Our database contains over one million surnames, helping customers explore the history and symbolism linked to their name.

Customers can explore our printed scrolls , crystal gifts and personalised heraldic products online or in our Dunster shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can anybody design a heraldic shield?

Yes. Anybody can create heraldic-style artwork for creative or decorative purposes.

Does creating a shield make it an official coat of arms?

No. Official coats of arms require recognition from the appropriate heraldic authority.

Do all people with the same surname share one coat of arms?

Father’s Day gifts can be hard to get right, but Hall of Names makes it easy. With a wide variety of personalised options to choose from, you’ll find something truly special for your dad. Let us help you find a gift he’ll never forget.

Whether your dad is interested in history or just loves personalised gifts, we have something to offer. Our collection of gifts includes personalised surname history prints, coat of arms gifts, and even customised swords. But that’s not all! We also have great options like personalised barware such as pint glasses and whisky tumblers. Plus, we have personal items such as cufflinks and neck chains.

What fathers day gifts will you surprise your Dad with?

Our top tips for choosing fathers day gifts

Here are some top tips to help you choose a great Father’s Day gift that’s personalised for your dad. Don’t forget, all of our gifts are tailored specifically to your dad’s surname, displaying the earliest-known coat of arms relating to the name.

Consider his interests. Think about what your dad likes to do in his spare time, such as family research, socialising, history, or walking. This can give you ideas for gifts that are tailored to his hobbies or passions. A Hi-gloss Printed Shield can be a great way to celebrate pride in the name.

Personalise with a message. Add a personal touch to your Father’s Day gifts by including a heartfelt message. You could write a note or have a message engraved on a gift like a watch. We have a wide variety available, so you can choose something that you feel would be best suited to him. Plus, you can be assured of the quality. Our crystal can mostly be engraved with extra wording, so perhaps Dad might liek a personalised Whisky Tumbler.

Choose something unique. Of course, we are bound tho say this – all of our fathers day gifts are unique to his surname! So instead of going for a typical Father’s Day gift like a tie or socks, look for something that’s a bit more unique. This could be something that reflects your dad’s personality or is tailored to his interests. Our surname history scrolls really fit the bill here. They include fascinating details about your dad’s surname and where it originated. Plus, he’ll be able to read about any lands owned, migration to the new world, and passengers on the Titanic with the name. He’ll even discover if there were any convicts with his name, sent to the colonies!

More things to consider

Think about practicality. Consider gifts that your dad will actually use and appreciate, such as a hip flask, tankard or a high-quality wallet.

Don’t be afraid to DIY. If you’re on a budget or want to add a personal touch, consider making a DIY father’s Day gift. This could be something like a homemade photo album or a personalised piece of artwork. We appreciate that the cost of living crisis is affecting most people at the moment. That said, our site has some great value gifts that still have the personal touch and are bound to impress. We’d love to help.

What fathers day gifts will you surprise your dad with?

Overall, the key to choosing a good personalised Father’s Day gift is to think about what your dad will truly enjoy and appreciate. By taking the time to select a thoughtful and unique gift, you can show your dad just how much he means to you.

Hall of Names has some great father day gifts.

Since moving into our shop in Dunster, we have been thinking about how we can offer something truly special for the local community. We wanted to create a focal point that celebrates the village and gives visitors a meaningful way to remember their time here.

That is why we have commissioned a brand new Dunster artwork, which will be arriving very soon.

Created especially for Hall of Names by artist Lucy Loveheart, this piece promises to capture the spirit of Dunster in a joyful and distinctive way. While the artwork is not yet in place, we are excited to share a preview of what is to come.

A celebration of Dunster and its landmarks

This new Dunster artwork will feature a stylised view of the village and its surroundings. It brings together many of Dunster’s most recognisable landmarks, including Dunster Castle, the Packhorse Bridge and the West Somerset Railway.

It also reflects the natural beauty of the area, from the rolling Exmoor hills to the coastline and surrounding landscape. Alongside these features, the artwork will highlight the independent shops and businesses that give Dunster its unique character.

Lucy Loveheart’s style is full of colour, movement and charm. Her work feels lively and uplifting, offering a fresh perspective on a place that so many people love to visit.

The piece also draws inspiration from the local landscape that inspired the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, adding another layer of meaning to the design.

Inspiring a new range of gifts

This Dunster artwork will not just be a single piece on display. It will form the inspiration for a brand new range of products, which we will be introducing in the coming months.

These items will sit alongside our existing collections, including our printed scrolls, crystal and glass gifts, and shields and plaques. As always, our products reflect heritage, storytelling and the earliest historically recorded coat of arms associated with a bearer of each surname.

This new direction allows us to offer something completely different. It gives visitors the chance to take home a unique memento of Dunster, inspired by a design that cannot be found anywhere else.

A growing connection with the Dunster community

Since opening our shop, we have enjoyed building strong connections within the Dunster community. This artwork reflects that relationship and brings together familiar places and shared experiences into one design.

We have worked closely with Lucy, sharing ideas and inspiration drawn from our shop, our customers and the village itself. As a result, the finished artwork promises to feel both personal and meaningful.

Watch this space

We are incredibly excited about what is coming next. The artwork will be arriving soon, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

We will be revealing the piece in the near future, along with the first products inspired by it. If you are interested in Dunster, local heritage or unique gifts, this is something to look out for.

Please keep an eye on our updates, follow along with our journey and share this with anyone who loves Dunster as much as we do.

Visit us in Dunster

If you are visiting Dunster, do come and see us. We would love to welcome you into our shop and share more about what we have planned.

What Are Scottish Septs?

In Scotland, many surnames are connected to larger clans as what are called septs. A sept is a family or group of families who may not share the same surname as the clan chief but historically owed allegiance to the clan.

Septs were often smaller branches of a clan, families living in the same area, or households brought under the protection of a chief. This system allowed clans to grow, form alliances, and strengthen ties across regions.

For example, the MacLaren clan historically included septs such as McFarlane and McLachlan. These families were connected to the clan through loyalty, shared ancestry, or protection agreements, even if their surnames differed.

Why Septs Matter in Heraldry

Septs do not automatically have the legal right to the clan chief’s coat of arms. The Lord Lyon King of Arms grants arms to individuals, not surnames or clans. However, members of septs often use a crest badge or elements from the chief’s heraldic symbols to show their connection.

These badges may include:

Crests from the chief’s arms

Plants or heraldic symbols indicating allegiance or shared heritage

Strap-and-buckle designs encircling the crest to show it belongs to the clan chief

This distinction is important: sept members can display a badge symbolically, but it does not give legal entitlement to the arms themselves.

Is your Scottish name affiliated to a clan?

Clan and Surname History Prints

Our Scottish Clan History Print is ideal for exploring the history of a clan, including its symbols, crest, and associated families. If your surname is actually the clan name, this print gives a full picture of your clan’s heritage and heraldic symbolism.

However, if your surname is a sept of a larger clan, the Clan History Print will show the history of the main clan rather than your surname specifically. In that case, the Coat of Arms and Surname History Print is the better choice.
